Dangers on the set lurk everywhere. And we are not just talking risky stunts, though of course there’s that too. The stress of managing time is a big one, isn’t it? Anything that delays the flow of the show is an economic danger to the production. What is the price that the quest for safety costs any given production? What about the cost of rushing, of short circuiting relationships, of cutting corners in any given department, of failed communications? What is the aggregate impact of the tensions of pre-production, production, post-production and how do they ultimately impact the art, the outcome of the work and its economic health? Is the impact of the dangers inversely proportionate to the budget? How can greater harmony serve the entire process?
Lisa Dalton offers four simple “feelings” based Michael Chekhov’s approach that are present in all peak performance: Beauty, Ease, Entirety, and Form. She will offer examples of how they can be applied from the earliest phases through the launch. By taking a little bit of time to share these with cast and crew, they become short cuts that increase the feeling of safety in time and space. Then, through creation of greater harmony throughout the production, you can even experience an increase in the pace and quality of the work while getting much more enjoyment in the process.
Lisa Dalton has over forty years in the film industry as an actor, director, producer and stunt woman. Her career was launched in New York in Soap Operas with Edge of Night and As the World Turns, on stage at La Mama and Lincoln Center and then in film. These range from playing a nasty bad girl in Barry Gordy’s enduring cult classic The Last Dragon to jumping off buildings, crashing motorcycles on cue or smashing into yellow cabs in blockbusters like Splash, Ghostbusters, Highlander, Married To the Mob, Money Pit, Crocodile Dundee and SNL. She doubled Cher, Meryl Streep, Grace Jones and Madonna.
Her career continued in Hollywood with ER, Dr. Quinn, Melrose Place, 100+ commercials and a gazillion indie films that no-one ever saw. She produced/directed many cable channel TV shows, winning various national, regional and local awards. Her 16 MM short film, Birds of a Feather, garnered various festival awards as well. She co-created/produced the PBS-aired documentary From Russia to Hollywood: The 100 Year Odyssey of Chekhov and Shdanoff, a finalist in the Hollywood Film Fest and screened at festivals in London and Berlin.
President of the National Michael Chekhov Association, author of The Michael Chekhov Playbook, Lisa is a certifying master teacher of Michael Chekhov’s Techniques for acting and directing. As a leader in the industry, Lisa has fought for parity, equity, inclusion and safety since her early days on the SAG Stunt and Safety Committee in NY.
