WIFVNE is thrilled to support our Corporate Members at GBH as they host a timely discussion about accurate representation of the disabled community in media with the inaugural event, Disability ReFramed: In Media, on Zoom and Livestreaming on Facebook Thursday, June 27th at 7PM EST>
Entitled "Nothing About Us Without Us" the discussion will highlight how disability is covered in both film and newsrooms, and speak candidly about how inclusion applies to work behind the camera and media organizations.
Hosted by producer/director Dan Habib, creator of the award-winning documentary films Including Samuel, Who Cares About Kelsey?, Mr. Connolly Has ALS, and Intelligent Lives, the evening's panelists are Cara Reedy, Founder and Director of the Disabled Journalists Association and Meghan Smith, Senior Producer at GBH News.
This new annual event at GBH promises to delve into the opportunities, strategies, and challenges facing journalists and filmmakers in news and film coverage today, asking the questions:
• Are people with disabilities considered, consulted, and represented accurately as both subjects and producers? • What are the impacts on public perception and community self-image; as well as strategies to overcome them? • How are journalists considering disability and the impact on disabled people when covering major news stories ranging from employment, climate change, healthcare, education and more? • Is your workplace, newsroom or film set ready to support disabled employees and makers? • How can organizations meaningfully implement “Nothing about us without us” to benefit storytelling in news and film?
